Perverted Patriotism essays Describe how patriotism is perverted in After the First Death. Of all ennobling sentiments, patriotism is probably the most easily manipulated. It can give a powerful expression to the best of a nations character: commitment to principle, strength and devotion. Patriotism can be great, but when taken too far innocence becomes evil. Patriotism can be described as the devotion to the welfare of ones country. In the novel After the First Death by Robert Cormier patriotism is perverted and used as an excuse by both opposing sides: the terrorists (Miro, Artkin, Antibbe, Stroll and Sedeete) and the secret organisation, Inner Delta. The terrorists justify their ruthless acts by excusing themselves as freedom fighters for their country. The head of Inner Delta, General Marchand or assumed identity General Rufus L Briggs takes patriotism to such extremes that he willingly sacrifices his son in order to defeat the terrorists. Thus, it can be said both sides value patriotism over life itself. Inner Delta is a secret government military organisation, which controls and maintains security for the benefit of the American citizens. It is not fully specified what the agency does, but it can be gathered that it is a type of intelligence organisation similar to the Australian equivalent ASIO. The head of this organisation, General Marchand takes patriotism to his heart. He believes the only thing worth living for is ones country. General Marchand perverts patriotism in After the First Death due to past events that have had a deep impact on him and affected him greatly. His patriotic ways came from the death of a close friend during WWII. Caught up in the fever of patriotism Mark Marchand joined the army along with his friend Jack Harkness towards the end of 1941. A decision support system that I recently used was actually using Amazon.com to find other books and information related to my previous orders and searches. Since I am an avid reader and enjoy history, I was trying to find more books relating to particular time periods I had already ordered and read about. Therefore, I was able to use the information I had provided to Amazon in the past to have them provide me a selection of possible books that I might be interested in, and might otherwise have overlooked. I felt that the results were accurate. For the most part, I was presented with results that reflected upon the same time period I wished to read more about, and a variety of authors. I was therefore able to find the information I needed to find. I find the whole experience very satisfying, as the search method was accurate enough to provide me with what I needed. Since I've chosen to major in psychology, I've chosen to do my paper on something that pertains to my major. In this case the mental disorder schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a severly disabilitating disease that has stricken the lives of almost two million people in the United States alone (Keefe 20). Since this disease is so devastating the majority of people that suffer from it either live on the streets or in mental institutions. In fact, forty percent of the beds in American mental hospitals are occupied by patients with schizophrenia (Hamilton 145). According to Hamilton the overall chances of a person to develop the disease is one in a hundred (145). There are three distinct types of schizophrenia that are diagnosed in today's society. These are disorganized, catatonic, and paranoid schizophrenia.Disorganized schizophrenia can start to show signs in early adolescents. These people portray inappropriate behaviors and emotions. For instance they may laugh at something like a close friend dieing or cry on a funny part of a movie. Disorganized schizophrenics also talk in a nonsensical manner. They make up their own language or just talk backwards. Catatonic schizophrenia is set apart from the others because of the persons with it unique catatonic, or motionless, state. These people spend lomg periods of time weeks, months, and occasionally years motionless or in other words "dead to the world" (Hamilton 120). When they do snaqp out of their catatomic state they are extremly hostile and aggressive. Last is paranoid schizophrenia which is characterized by the false beliefs or delusions the person has. For example the thought that the FBI planted a secret microchip in their brain and is controlling them. Alomg with these specific types of schizophrenia are some symptoms that pertain to all schizophrenics.Firstoff, all people diagnosed with schizophrenia have perceptual difficulties, that is, they sufer from hallucinations. A hallucination is a false sensory experience, such as seeing things, hearing things, and even feeling things that aren't really there. Hallucinatioms have a compelling sense of reality to the persons who suffer from them. Auditory hallucinationsare by far the most common form of hallucinatiom in schizophrenia. They are so characteristic of the disease that a person with true auditory hallucinations should be assumed to h... ...f the problem and therfore were removed. Instead of helping the schizophrenic, though, it just took what shreds of personality they had left and left them like zombies. Times have changed and extinsive research is done on all theoretical treatments before they are administered to any real patients. The most important and helpful treatment used today is that of drugs. Drugs used to treat schizophrenia are called antipsychotics. Keefe pointed out that antipsychotics reduce symptoms of the disease, shorten a patients stay in the hospital, and reduce the chances of rehospitalization (145). Persons with schizophrenia, when entering psychiatric hospitals, used to stay for several weeks or even months. With these new antipsychotic drugs, though, the stay has been reduced to just days. In fact a person who takes the drugs has a 3-out-of-5 chance (60 percent) of not being rehospitalized (Keefe 164). These antipsychotics work by blocking certain receptors of certain types of neurotransmitters in the brain. For instance chlorpromazine is an atipsychotic that blocks the receptorsfor dopamine, which as I explained is believed to be the cause of most symptoms of schizophrenia (Anderson 97).

Critical Literacy Autobiography Essay

For a girl like me, reading and writing has never come easy. I understand how to read and write I just don’t have a big vocabulary or a desire to open up a book and read. Not putting blame on any one individual, I just feel as if all throughout my education I haven’t been taught how to write well. Maybe writing is something you can’t be taught how to do but I have some friends who are amazing writers and plan to continue their education in journalism. They all have had the same teachers I have had and all have been taught the same curriculum but somehow I fall short as a writer. I don’t believe writing is something you can be literate about I feel you either have a desire to write or you don’t. I have learned to read and write minimal and in the next decade I feel students will be taught less and less on how to read and write. Eventually the way of learning will be vocal and all you will have to know is how to listen and speak. Most commonly, when I have to write it’s not out of finding fun in writing it is more because of an assignment like this where the only end result is a grade and I feel as if more students feel the same way because there is so much technology that you don’t have to be as creative as in the past. My favorite reading is dramas. Things that I can relate to in my everyday life, I love those books that you just can’t put down no matter how hard you try, therefore, I hate those books that you are dragging yourself along in just for the end grade. I find writing fun if I am writing about a topic that I can relate closely too. Although, I do find that writing for fun still doesn’t come easy and I still spend hours trying to figure out how I want to put the words on a piece of paper. In the story from Malcolm X, he is full of knowledge; he repeatedly states different historical events with their dates. He has knowledge that he can elaborate on where I do not. He also refers to Muhammad a lot during his writing and that is someone that is a â€Å"teacher† to him. He has learned many things from Muhammad which made him the man he was. He has built a reputation through his teaching of history which gives him credentials. He taught me that you can learn to read and write over time but it’s not something that you have to be born with when he stated â€Å"I suppose it was inevitable that as my word-base broadened, I could for the first time pick up a book and read and now begin to understand what the book was saying. † (X) This shows that Malcolm X learned how to read and write while in prison. It shouldn’t be that hard for me to learn to write but somehow I just can’t grasp the concept of becoming a good writer. Anne Lamott has said it all for me in her essay â€Å"Shitty First Drafts†. She mentions that â€Å"Very few writers really know what they’re doing until they’ve done it. † (Lamott) This goes to show that I am not the only person that sucks at writing and after people review and help revise and edit my paper then I slowly start to get on the right path and organize all of my thoughts to go into one direction. Lamott also exclaims â€Å"Almost all good writing begins with terrible first efforts. † (Lamott) This gives me hope that my essays in college may turn out exceptional. I understand that other people have the same problem I do and although they went through elementary, middle school and high school they too cannot produce a wonderful first draft. One day I hope to become a person that gets an idea and can take out a sheet of paper and write down everything on my mind without having to stop and think if I could reword something to sound better. Writing should be like watching television something that relaxes you and lets you vent out all of your stress and problems. I know a lot of people who use journals or diaries to vent out onto and as they are writing away they don’t stop to rephrase something or let their grammar get in the way and that is how a first draft should be. As for me I worry all the way through about if it makes sense, if I am repeating myself, or even if I am writing what is asked of me. People who are authors writer because their love for writing and I know authors that are terrible at getting their point across or take the whole book before spilling the gossip but people still read their books and still get intrigued by their writing. I hope throughout the next eight years of college I will become more literate as a reader, writer, and speaker. I will have a larger vocabulary and use it in a unique way. I understand that I won’t have an English class for the next eight years but I will continue to perfect my writing into something people enjoy reading about. I will make every effort to perfect my writing in this class and the rest of my future. As a student reading and writing skills are vital to success so this class and others shall help me perk mine in the right direction. Critique on Genetically Modifying Humans Essay

Richard Hayes has written about a topic that most of us have rarely heard about, but have probably seen in a movie once before. In the 1950’s, after Watson and Crick had discovered DNA structures, it was predicted that one day we would be able to genetically enhance our children. Since this prediction, scientists have been discovering specific genes that can alter such areas as: reduction of the risk of depression, potentially doubling life span, growing taller and so forth. Richard goes on to mention that the possibilities of genetic modifications are great, since there are 30,000 genes in the human genome. Mr Hayes sites these claims of genome bioengineering from science magazine articles, University scientific studies, and biotech pharmaceutical company reports. On the same breath, as he talks about all the miracles that can be accomplished by these high tech advancements, he describes the dark side of leveraging these breakthroughs. Richard worries about this technology only being used to prevent medical conditions and not for a hugely profitable cosmetic and enhancement consumer product. Once the first genetically modified child is born, it could lead to a chain of events that could never be undone or controlled. This new wave of bioengineered humans would no longer be playing by the rules of natural selection we all know. These new super humans could regard the non-genetically modified humans as inferior and see themselves as the masters. This potentially can lead the world into dark ages, where they would be the masters and everyone else, their slaves. Hayes certainly does make some bold claims, but most of which are backed by reputable scientific data. He references University of California studies, where it has been proven that genes are related to life span. When it comes to the potential for genome engineering, each of Hayes logical arguments is supported by a credible source. When it comes to genetically modifying â€Å"things†, we hear about it all the time. Now-a-days, we hear about the miracles of stem cell research, cloning your dog and genetically modified foods. What Hayes is speaking of sounds completely plausible. The next step after successfully bioengineering your food, would be to bioengineer your family pet, then your children. I would want a dog that doesn’t chew up my slippers, dig holes in my garden; or a child that was immune to disease and had a perfect memory. Wouldn’t you? This technology would have to be made available to every person on the planet. If it were not available to all, it probably would be misused, in a multitude of ways. I do think this is something we must do. We must keep progressing as a species, even if it means engineering ourselves. We could engineer our kids to be extremely intelligent, live twice as long and be immune to disease. How else are we going to explore the cosmos to discover a new planet to settle on? This article started off as an intriguing read and ended up in a dark twisted world, more like something you would see in a sci-fi movie. It is hard to say how things would exactly play out, if we allowed gene modification. Richard makes all sorts of assumptions about how the world would turn out if it is allowed. He talks about how it would be impossible to allow everyone access to this technology. A few years ago a team of academics gathered to try and figure out a way to make this possible. They determined that it would not be feasible to bring the new eugenic technologies to everyone. How do they know this to be? Once this technology is perfected and ready for mass production, it could be as cheap as an entry level cell phone these days.

MONSTERS, INC. evaluation essays Producer John Lasseter is quoted on the official web site of Monsters, Inc. saying, Audiences love when they see something theyve never seen before but yet has some aspect to which they can relate. Monsters, Inc. lives up to this statement. Initially I was expecting a copy of the Toy Story duo or A Bugs Life, since the movie is made by the same production company, PIXAR. I also initially deduced that this movie would be childish. I viewed the previous PIXAR films at a younger age and thus I felt as if I had grown out of the movies demographic. Still, I decided to give the movie a chance, and it was a chance I was glad to take. The movie is set in Monstropolis, which is much like a modern day industrial city where monsters thrive. Monsters, Inc., the biggest scream-processing factory in Monstropolis, is actually where the lead characters, James P. Sullivan (known as Sully) and his best friend, roommate, and co-worker Mike Wazowski, both work. Sulley is a huge, menacing monster with blue fur, large purple spots and horns, yet he can be as harmless as a mouse. Mike is a lime green, opinionated, lively, one-eyed monster. Sulley (voiced by John Goodman) is an elite Scarer and Mike (voiced by Billy Crystal) is his Scare assistant. Some of the other characters in the film include Monsters, Inc.s crab-like, hard-nosed, and corrupt CEO, Henry J. Waternoose (voiced by James Coburn), a serpent-haired (much like Medusa) receptionist Celia (voiced by Jennifer Tilly) who is Mikes love interest, and the cynical chameleon monster Randall Boggs (voiced by Steve Buscemi), who tries to replace Sulley as the companys t op Scarer. The article is aimed at advancing literature on the relationship between multinational corporations and their foreign subsidiaries. ... rganizational conflict in multinational corporations between headquarters and their foreign subsidiaries is not a characteristic of dysfunction and unsuccessful global integration. This is a matter I concur with. Multinational corporations operate in different regions globally. These regions have different cultures under which these businesses are set to operate, hence cultural differences that can cause conflicts. This calls for the management to adopt different strategies when managing relationships between headquarter and subsidiaries. A question that I seek to ask is, if this is the problem, then what is the way forward? According to Schotter and Beamish, global integration measures can be adopted to deal with this challenge. Global integration refers to strategic and organizational activities that seek to reduce organizational and operational differences between a multinational corporation and its subsidiaries (Do?rrenba?cher and Geppert 191). A multinational corporation has to manage many subsidiaries and as a result other factors that trigger conflicts emerge. These factors include global and local competitor strategies, host and home country regulatory requirements, differing market and customer preferences and managerial characteristics and preferences among others. Negotiation is one of the ways through which an organization can resolve a conflict (Adams and Markus 337). A multinational corporation can hardly do away with foreign subsidiaries, since it is meant to operate globally. Cultural differences can result into conflict in multinational corporations; therefore there is need for negotiations of culture in these firms. I find this article relevant to my research topic as it outlines various sources of conflict as a result of foreign spheres of operation.
